Sustainability in the life sciences sector – from paper reality to commodity

Van derden

06/03/24

Focus on sustainability has shifted from a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘must have’ for many companies taking into account sustainability legislation being recently implemented or in the final negotiation phase at European level. To name a few developments, a provisional agreement at EU level was reached on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD) in December 2023. The CSDD requires social and environmental due diligence and actions to put a stop to adverse impacts. Last January, the European Parliament approved a directive banning generic green claims such as ‘environmentally friendly’. Further rules on green claims are scheduled for voting in the upcoming months.

Topics
Topics include the current and upcoming legal framework for green claims and environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations, and the practical implementation thereof in the life sciences sector. What can and should companies be doing to ensure compliance? Kyle Brookmeyer from FrieslandCampina will explain how sustainability can be achieved by food companies taking the dairy sector as an example. Schelto Kruijff from University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), who recently held his inaugural lecture on sustainable innovation with a green operation, will shed his light on sustainability in the medical sector from the viewpoint of “planetary health”.
